Chef Steven Titman has teamed up with Cellar Master Eric Zwiebel, recognised as one of the four best Sommeliers in the world, to make a superb combination - these special evenings will provide a series of extraordinarily enjoyable experiences that draw connoisseurs of fine wine and exceptional cuisine from far and wide.

Focusing on a selected house or style, with a guest speaker to inform and entertain diners, each evening begin at 7.00 pm with an introduction to the selected wines. Few of life’s pleasures are so easy to enjoy as wine. But that enjoyment can be hugely enhanced with a little knowledge – and this 2-day package provides an excellent opportunity to learn from one of the world’s most highly regarded experts.

As UK Sommelier of the Year in 2004, and a runner-up in the Best Sommelier of the World Competition in 2007, our Cellar Master Eric Zwiebel possesses an incredible passion for his subject. He delights in sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm in a fun way that everyone finds easy to follow.

Guests attend two 90-minute masterclasses with Eric where they’ll learn about the differences between old and new world wines, how to match food and wine, how to recognise a good wine and how to get the best from any restaurant wine list.

The restaurant at Summer Lodge was recently voted "Best Restaurant in Dorset" in the Taste of Dorset Award 2009 and during dinner Eric will be on hand to provide further insights. On the first evening, diners will get the opportunity to put some of their newly acquired skills into practice as they choose wines to accompany their meal. On the second evening they’ll enjoy a spectacular 8-course degustation menu while Eric guides them through the wines that he has specially selected to match each dish.

Gourmet Cookery Demonstrations

Diners at Summer Lodge are invariably bowled over by the talent and expertise of Executive Chef Steve Titman. Before joining us in 2004 he honed his skills at the White Barn Inn in Kennebunkport, a restaurant recognised as one of the top ten in the US. Steve has built on this experience to create a reputation for himself that has spread around the globe. So it’s no surprise that Summer Lodge has recently been named Best Restaurant in Dorset at the Taste of Dorset Awards 2009.

Following on from this success, Steve will be hosting two cookery demonstrations, on 24th February and 24th March, where he’ll share some of his culinary secrets. He’ll show guests how he uses local produce, such as Lyme Bay scallops and Dorset lamb, together with the vegetables and herbs grown in the kitchen garden, to create some of his most popular signature dishes.

Steve explains that “it’s almost like ‘a behind the scenes tour of the Kitchen and into my culinary secrets where each menu is designed to surprise the guests, drawing from the freshest local and seasonal sources’. Each two and a half hour demonstration in the kitchen will be in the morning, followed by aperitifs and a delicious 3-course lunch with wines served in the restaurant.

Adventures in Food

Rediscover the ancient art of foraging, where you poke around in rock pools, hedgerows and ancient woodlands for morsels of free food, with acknowledged expert John Wright – star of TV show River Cottage and author of the popular books, "Edible Seashore" and "Mushroom Handbook".

As John lives near Summer Lodge we’ve persuaded him to lead three very different forages to introduce guests and diners to the joys of these fascinating food adventures. Any guests staying in the hotel on Friday or Saturday night are welcome to come on the forage for free, but the sessions are also open to non-residents who are dining at the hotel on the evenings of the dates below.

In the evening all foragers can sit down to a suitably themed dinner. Signed copies of John’s books also available, which we can send you in advance of the day.

Saturday 17th April 2010 – Seashore Forage - from £350*
Leaving the hotel at about 10am everyone will drive and share cars to the spectacular Jurassic Coast (40 minutes away) where John will lead them on an all day forage until about 15:30. Low water is at 13:17, which is perfect for a day of scrambling over rocks (so you need to be reasonably fit) once the tide is out. We will also provide a Forager's Picnic, if required.

Saturday 18th September 2010 – Hedgerow Forage - from £385*
John is working on a hedgerow foraging book which should be published on 4th August – so he has lots of information to share. Taking place near the hotel there will be a morning session starting at 9.30am with a short talk by John. The afternoon session starts at 2.30pm, again with a brief talk. In between, hungry foragers review the morning’s haul and can enjoy a hearty lunch at the Acorn Inn. You can do either session, or both, and lunch is optional. At 6.30pm everyone will gather in the hotel to examine and discuss all the different “finds” with John, before sitting down to dinner at 7.30pm.

Saturday 30th October 2010 – Mushroom Forage - from £385*
Similar in format and schedule to the hedgerow forage, but concentrating on the search for edible and other interesting fungi. Morning on the nearby chalk downlands, while for the afternoon session John takes everyone into the local woods. Lunch at the Acorn Inn features a number of mushroom dishes, with a review of the morning’s harvest. We’re very lucky to have John for this weekend as it’s one of the best mushrooming days of the season.

Writers Weekend package

A weekend in the company of writers

Summer Lodge has some remarkable literary connections. As well as being in the heart of Hardy’s Wessex the great writer was commissioned, in his capacity as an architect, to add a second floor to then Dower House, and to redesign the Drawing Room. The nearby Acorn Inn also appears in his novel 'Tess of the d'Urbervilles' as 'The Sow & Acorn'.
We therefore thought it appropriate to host a special Writers Weekend that would give guests the opportunity to learn more about the craft from those who’ve made a career from it.

Four very different writers will talk about their work and how they approach it.

Roger Collis is an actor, broadcaster, writer and master raconteur who has earned world-wide recognition as a business travel guru through his weekly column, 'The Frequent Traveler,' in the International Herald Tribune and as a contributing columnist for the New York Times.

Marcelle Bernstein is a much acclaimed novelist, non-fiction writer and journalist whose work has appeared in major publications in the UK and USA. Several of her novels, such as “Body & Soul” and “Sacred & Profane”, have become best-sellers as well as being turned into successful feature films and television dramas.

Eric Clark is an respected investigative journalist who has delved into the seedier aspects of crime and drugs, as well as revealing the shadier practices of the marketing industry. He loves using his research for writing gripping thrillers – “Black Gambit” and “Chinese Burn” have both proved particularly popular.

Jim O’Connor is an advertising copywriter practiced in the dark arts of persuasion featured in some of Eric’s books. He has promoted everything from boutique hotels to fork lift trucks, Clover Low Fat Spread to Palmolive Soap, Cornish Pasties to Australian rum.
