Summer Lodge is rich in literary associations. Not only is it at the very heart of the Wessex landscapes immortalised by Thomas Hardy - the world famous novelist, a trained architect - who designed the stunning Drawing Room. What’s more, the Sow and Acorn pub, featured in his novel Tess of the D’Urbervilles was inspired by the nearby Acorn Inn.
So where better to stay if you are attending the much celebrated Bridport Literary Festival? Summer Lodge is barely 30 minutes drive away from this charming market town and you can unwind after your mental exertions with a self indulgent pampering session in the spa, or over an excellent meal in the award winning restaurant.
Highlights include talks from Rodric Braithwaite and Sherard Cowper-Coates on their experiences in Afghanistan, Claire Tomlinson exploring the life of Charles Dickens and Valentine Warner discussing his book The Good Table, which he describes as his heart on a plate.
In addition, several authors and historians will explore Turkey's complex relationship with Europe and debate the country's culture, history and future.
