Event: Heritage Open Days at the Portland Museum
Date: September 11th -12th
The idyllic countryside in Dorset is an ideal destination for the summer months, giving visitors the chance to relax and enjoy some stunning scenery on the English coast.
And those who want to learn more about the area are not short of options, as it is home to a number of museums and galleries that offer an insight into Dorset life.
One such attraction is the Portland Museum, which was founded in 1930 but given a major makeover last year to bring it up to date.
Housed in two picturesque stone cottages in Portland near Weymouth, the museum is home to new displays based on four themes - famous people, local archaeology, stone and the sea.
And on September 11th and 12th visitors can explore the museum free-of-charge as part of the Heritage Open Days event, giving them the chance to see items recovered from the wrecks of the Earl of Abergavenny and the Royal Adelaide - both of which sunk nearby - in the Maritime Room.
The Stone Room offers a history of Portland Stone, which is quarried nearby and used in buildings all over the world, while the Portland Galleries contains archaeological items found during excavations that have taken place over the years.
After spending a day at the museum, guests who have booked the Get More From Your Stay package at luxury Dorset hotel the Summer Lodge will be able to enjoy afternoon tea for two on one day of their stay, or instead opt to receive a complimentary bottle of champagne on arrival.
