Visit Maiden Castle, an Iron Age hill fort

Event: Visit Maiden Castle
Date: All year

Maiden Castle is the largest and most complex Iron Age hill fort in Britain and is a must see for people from out of town.

Built in 600BC over the remains of a Neolithic settlement, the multiple ramparts enclose an area the size of 50 football pitches and it stands as one of the most amazing places to visit in the country.

Maiden is derived from the Celtic 'Mai Dun', meaning great hill and that is exactly what visitors will find when they reach this iconic landmark.

Excavations over the years have revealed that occupation of the hilltop began over 4,000 years ago and have uncovered an extensive late Iron Age cemetery.

In AD43, Maiden Castle was invaded by the Roman army and a Roman temple was constructed on the site in the 4th century, some of which is still standing today.

A visit to Maiden Castle will give guests at the luxury Dorset hotel Summer Lodge the chance to see the wonderful Dorchester scenery and take in a significant piece of British history.

Afterwards, travellers can return to the hotel and relax with the delights of the Spa Package.

Guests can look forward to luxurious accommodation, a full English breakfast each day, an Elemis Taster Facial, an hour-long full-body massage and a two-course lunch at the spa.
