Event: Macmillan Dorset Bike Ride charity event
Date: July 6th 2008
Luxury hotel in Dorset the Summer Lodge may provide a welcome respite for cyclists this year, following the announcement of an annual cancer research fundraising ride.
The streets of Dorset will be buzzing with furious peddling on Sunday July 6th, as the area hosts the 20th Macmillan Dorset Bike Ride, sponsored by Sunseeker International and Primera Sport.
Attracting around 700 cyclists each year, the event raised £56,533 in 2007 - a total that organisers are hoping to smash this year, with the addition of two new distances, the Macmillan Dorset 100 and a special 50-mile route.
Peter Smith Nicholls established the Macmillan charity bike ride in 1989, a year after cycling the length of the UK - from John O Groats to Land's End - in memory of his own father, who died of cancer.
Dorset is a popular cycling holiday location, with routes including traffic-free trails between Somerford and Burton which border the famously picturesque New Forest.
