Noah Babel's Ark

Event: Noah Babel's Ark
Date: June 11th until June 28th 2008

Rural players The Rude Mechanical Theatre Company head to Dorset this June to present a dark surreal comedy that will no doubt provide much entertainment for those staying in suites at luxury Dorset hotel the Summer Lodge.

Noah Babel's Ark is an outdoor performance taking place at the Lodge, Cranborne, the recreation ground at Child Okeford and Durlston County Park.

A "dark and menacing" comedy thriller, the play is a re-working of the Noah's Ark legend, set in Bermondsey in 1922 and tells the story of Jewish carver Noah Babel, who makes carousel animals, and his efforts to help his family survive in the falsely optimistic city of London.

Noah is commissioned to make animals for a travelling fair's carousel but comes across problems when calling the loan in. Mysterious occurrences and steady rainfall add to the ambience.

"The play is very funny, but comedy is someone else's tragedy," The Rude Mechanical Theatre Company points out.

According to the theatre company, many of the carousel animals produced for fairs in America and in England in the late 1800s and early 1900s were carved by Jewish carvers who had been driven from eastern Europe.
