Dorset County Museum Romney Appeal

Event: Dorset County Museum Romney Appeal
Date: February 28th 2008

Guests staying at luxury Dorset hotel the Summer Lodge this February with an interest in furniture are in luck.

Taking place at the nearby Dorset County Museum on February 28th 2008 will be a surgery hosted by ceramics expert Anthony du Boulay and furniture boffin Michael Legg.

The pair will be looking in detail at the Museum's collections of furniture and ceramics from the 18th century as part of the George Romney appeal.

George Romney is a key 18th century British artist and Dorset County Museum currently has the opportunity to buy a set of three portraits by Romney, an artist the museum claims is of "national, even international, importance".

Currently, more than £105,000 of the £250,000 has been raised to help purchase the works by the contemporary of fellow artist Thomas Gainsborough.

Paintings that the museum wishes to purchase - and which will then be on display for guests of the luxury hotel to view - include Thomas Rackett the Younger, Thomas Rackett the Elder and Mrs Rackett.

"They are an important part of Dorset's history, and should be kept where they are most relevant and can be best appreciated," the museum notes.
