Do you fancy getting hands-on with a dinosaur? Then don’t miss our day of fossil hunting on the Jurassic Coast, England's first natural World Heritage Site, with expert geologist and fossil-finder Bill Verkaik.

The trip, on Saturday 10th August, is complimentary for any guests who stay at Summer Lodge Country House Hotel, Restaurant and Spa over that weekend - and promises to be an unforgettable adventure!  No experience is necessary, equipment is provided and all ages are welcome.

We’ll gather after breakfast at 9.30am on Saturday morning (so best to arrive on Thursday 8th or Friday 9th) and drive to Seatown in our own cars to meet Bill at 10.30am.

Things start with a short introductory talk on fossil hunting, how to use the equipment and a quick safety briefing.  Bill will then take everyone along the beach to show them how to spot the rocks which are most likely to contain fossils. "Seatown is a great place for fossil hunting," enthuses Bill, "as the rocks are 189 million years old. The most common fossils are ammonites and belemnites, but you can also find crinoids and ichthyosaur teeth and bones. It's also wonderful to see people of all ages getting stuck in and enjoying themselves. There's nothing like the excitement of a unearthing a fossil - you get the sense that you are the first person to have seen this creature since it died some 190 million years ago!"

There will be a break for lunch.  We can prepare a delicious picnic for you (at a small charge) or you can tuck into pub grub at the local Inn, right on the beach at Seatown.  Bill will continue the fossil-hunt until mid afternoon but you may prefer to just relax by the water's edge.

"But the day doesn’t end there" concludes Bill. "People take their finds home, clean them up, and display them proudly. A piece of history, one you've discovered yourself… it's priceless!"  All together, it's a fantastic day out for kids and adults alike.
