In our Gardens

Our Gardener John Eke has worked very hard to make sure the gardens at Summer Lodge are more than just magnificent. The following initiatives are in place to further reduce our carbon footprint:

  • Large, purpose-built composting area 
  • Prunings are shredded and composted for mulching
  • Drought resistant species of flora are planted wherever possible
  • Peat-free compost is always used for our potted plants
  • Vegetable waste is always composted, minimising contribution to landfill and reducing the need for chemicals to fertilise and enrich the soil in our kitchen's garden 
  • Tea leaves, coffee grounds and egg shells go onto the compost heap – wonderful sources of slow-release nitrogen
  • We built two enormous poly tunnels to propagate our own bedding plants (20,000 a year!), instead of importing them from Holland (with all the associated expenses and CO2 generation)
  • Increased biodiversity by planting native species that encourage bees, birds, butterflies and other insects
  • Flowering plants instead of cut flowers are used in guest rooms and the restaurant as they last much longer and continue to convert CO2 to oxygen. This reduces the need to purchase cut flowers which very often come from across the Channel, resulting in fewer air miles, packaging, and the need for the refrigeration
  • Plastic plant pots and trays are reused and then recycled
  • A kitchen garden from which we obtain cabbage, salad vegetables and herbs in summer, and root vegetables in Winter. And because we do not use pesticides, we work hard to attract the wildlife that eats the pests
